Title: Strawberry Shortcake
Artist: AJGlass
Image created by: AJGlass using an Epson Perfection 1200U scanner and PhotoShop.
Medium: Glass
Type: Soft Glass, 104 Coefficient of Expansion (Moretti/Effetre, Vetrofond, Lausha)
Description: Glass Beads

Details: The dime provided is for scale of the smaller image. Bubblegum Pink glass, Dark Orchid Thompson Enamel and Petal Pink Thompson Enamel were used to create these beads which have been annealed in a kiln. The focal bead took 20 minutes to make, each spacer bead took 2 minutes to make, and all of these beads took 18 hours to anneal. No image color correction was necessary. These beads have been calibrated and temporarily strung.

Discussion: The focal bead was created by pressing and flattening molten glass between two graphite marvers to create the medallion shape. Using a large tweezers, Petal Pink Thompson Enamel powder and then Dark Orchid Thompson Enamel powder were randomly scooped onto the medallion. The medallion was then carefully heated in the torch flame so that the enamel powders melted but at the same time kept a bit of their texture.

Further comment: This set was named Strawberry Shortcake because of its coloration – which reminded me of the colors used on the Strawberry Shortcake dolls from the 1980’s. The shape of the focal bead has been compared to that of a frosted cookie. In my opinion, the Bubblegum Pink glass is more the color of cherry yogurt than pink bubblegum.

This looks really beautiful. This happens to be my favorite one among the other glass bead works and now I'm hungry because of it. =P
