Title: Glass Mushroom
Artist: AJGlass
Image created by: AJGlass using an Epson Perfection 1200U scanner and PhotoShop.
Medium: Glass
Type: Soft Glass, 104 Coefficient of Expansion (Moretti/Effetre, Vetrofond, Lausha)
Description: Glass Sculpture

Details: The dime provided is for scale of the smaller image. The smaller image is the top view of the same mushroom. Clear glass and grass green transparent glass were used to create this sculpture which has been annealed in a kiln. This sculpture took 30 minutes to make and 18 hours to anneal. No image color correction was necessary.

Discussion: It was difficult for me to create this sculpture for two reasons:

1. This glass mushroom was created off-mandrel. I used one glass rod and a pair of tweezers to hold and shape it.

2. This glass mushroom is large – created from a 1.5 centimeter-wide rod of clear glass – and large glass pieces are prone to thermal shock and cracking.

Further comment: At present, I have created more than 75 glass mushrooms in various colors and of various sizes. I am really pleased that this sculpture survived the annealing process.

I love the sheen and texture of it, the inset picture looks as though light is coming from inside the mushroom.

Japanese is really Welsh spoken really fast.

YAOI is not an acronym for "yamete, oshiri itai" - "Stop it, my butt hurts!", even though this interpretation is funnier.

What a fun little thing! :D

It's really interesting to read your comments on the glass-art process. Since I was very young I've been interested in hearing how it's complete. Thank you for sharing the ups and downs of the process!

This is really beautiful! I love the effect you used on the cap; it gives the piece a great texture.
The colour choice seems to work well in a transparent medium. I'd love to see it for real.

I'm glad this piece survived too!
